The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup, one of the premier sporting events in the world, will take place in South Africa from June 11-July 11, 2010. South Africa anticipates welcoming over 450,000 football fans for this game. If this event is on your holiday calendar, make sure to add several South African stops in your plans. Following is a guide to the Drakensberg mountain range, one of the most formidable tourist destinations in the country.

The Drakensberg is the tallest mountain range in South Africa, soaring to 3,482 meters. Situated in the eastern portion of South Africa and covering approximately 1,000 kilometers from southwest to northeast, its largest area is in KwaZulu-Natal Province. In 2000, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) designated this mountainous area as a World Heritage Site. This area is also referred to as the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park and it covers 243,000 hectares.

The mountains are famous for their plant life and animal population. Mary Alexander's "Drakensberg: Barrier of Spears" lists 299 different varieties of birds. Many wild animals inhabit the Drakensberg, particularly the rare Southern white rhino and the black wildebeest.

A number of caves exist in the Drakensberg in which the San people dwelt thousands of years ago. It is famous for its detailed rock paintings, which tell the story of the Bushmen, how they live and how they pray; it has the greatest number of rock paintings in sub-Sahara Africa.

The Drakensberg range offers dozens of enjoyable pastimes for you during your visit. The intrepid likely will enjoy rock climbing, abseiling and white water rafting. But if you would rather engage in the less rigorous activity of hiking, there are plenty of hiking trails in the Drakensberg to satisfy any enthusiast - from the highest peak of Thabana Ntlenyana to the lower peaks like Cathedral’s Peak. You will also be able to enjoy bird watching and horseback riding.

If you are planning to visit Drakensberg, there are a number of high end, 5 star hotels, guesthouses and game lodges to consider for your stay. There are a number of affordably priced accommodations from which you can choose: the grass-thatched Antbear Guesthouse, the Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse in the Kamberg Valley, the tree-houses of Sycamore Avenue, etc.

June and July are excellent months to visit the Drakensberg to bask in its beauty, since that is the time of South Africa's dry winter season. Don't miss this splendid mountain range while traveling to your football destination.
